San Jose stutter against weakened Seattle

San Jose Earthquakes' three game winning streak came to an end after a disappointing 1-0 home loss to the Seattle Sounders.

Cristian Roldan's superb volley was enough for the Sounders, who rotated heavily for the midweek game and had to deal with in game injuries to Jordy Delem and Stefan Frei.

Defeat means San Jose remain second in the West, with Seattle opening up a four point advantage at the top of the conference.

The game's only goal came early on, as the Earthquakes only cleared a Nouhou Tolo cross as far as Roldan on the edge of the box who volleyed home brilliantly.

San Jose rallied and should have levelled before the break; however Frei produced a superb close range save to deny Cade Cowell.

After the break the Earthquakes dominated for long periods, with Carlos Fierro spurning a golden chance to equalise.

With time running out, Frei went off with a bad looking knee injury, forcing defender Alex Roldan to don the gloves for the final moments of the game.

Unfortunately from an Earthquakes perspective he was rarely troubled and the Sounders held on for all three points, extending their start to 4-0-1.
