FC Dallas faced the Vancouver Whitecaps for their annual Fourth of July home game. Unfortunately Dallas lost their early lead just before the end of the first half. A late push from Dallas leveled the game near the end, making the score 2-2.
The attack is improving. Jesus Ferreira and Ricardo Pepi have built a great partnership in just four games. Their chemistry in the attack is reminiscent of the partnership between Maxi Urruti and Mauro Diaz. In four games since his return from injury, Ferreira has two assists. Pepi now has four goals in four games, two of them directly assisted from Ferreira.
As the offense has begun to improve, the defense has regressed. Seventeen goals have been scored against Dallas. Jimmy Maurer and Phelipe have both performed well in most of their matches, unfortunately for the two goalkeepers, the defenders in front of them haven't been great. Poor positioning and man-marking has plagued nearly the whole backline.
The first Vancouver goal saw Bressan unable to intercept the ball as it was played into the box. The second Vancouver goal came from a Deiber Caicedo corner kick that was perfectly placed for an uncontested Andy Rose.
At the moment, Luchi Gonzalez doesn't have many options in the defense. Matt Hedges and Jose Martinez are both injured, leaving Bressan as the lone veteran centerback. Nkosi Tafari has joined Bressan in the recent games and played well but due to his limited minutes, he is still at the level of a rookie. Justin Che has been employed as a rightback but is a natural centerback so he can slide over if needed but as a seventeen year old in his first professional season, he doesn't offer much over Tafari.
Paxton Pomykal, after subbing on in the second half, pushed the offense for a tying goal. Despite nothing coming from his attempts early on, he continued to push forward, taking shots or playing the ball to teammates in better positions. His work finally paid off in extra time of the second half as he crossed the ball into the box to Pepi. Instead of Pepi though, it came to a Vancouver defender, who directed it into their goal.
This game, despite being a tie, feels like a loss. Dallas will now play three games on the road, where they have been unable to get points. Their next game will be Wednesday, July the 7th at 9:30pm against the L.A Galaxy at Dignity Health Sports Park
